SCARBOROUGH – Dwight Clifford “Nick” Nicholson, 79, formerly of Portland, died Dec. 24, 2005, at the Maine Veterans’ Home. He was born in North Conway, N.H., the son of Theodore Clifford Nicholson and Ruth Coleman Nicholson. He attended Fryeburg schools and was a graduate of Fryeburg Academy. Nick then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations aboard the USS Oneida. It was while he was in the Navy, that he met and married his wife, the former Harriette Lawrence. Nick worked in managerial positions most of his life. He first worked for Carnation and later was a manager for Cushman’s Bakery in Portland for several years. He then took a position with Grant’s Dairy in Bangor, where his territory included the islands Downeast. While working for Grant’s, Nick and his family lived in the Rockland area. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies. Nick was predeceased by his wife, who died April 14, 2005; and a son, Cliff Nicholson, who died in 2004. Surviving is a daughter, Paulette Sprague Ferguson and her husband, Norman, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three grandchildren, Kim Dionne and her husband, John, of Brewer, Allyson Sprague of Bangor and Alyssa Nicholson of Newbury, Mass.; three great-grandchildren, Evan Dionne, Bridget Dionne and Jakeb Clifford Dionne, all of Brewer; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Burial will be at a later date at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Huntington’s Disease Society of America, 505 Eighth Ave., Suite 902, New York, NY, 10018.
