ORONO – Mary White died Dec. 28, 2005, after a long battle with cancer. She was born Aug. 12, 1930, the daughter of Marcellus and Elizabeth (Eby) Eckhardt. Mary graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1948, and from Baylor University in 1952. She studied modern dance with Pearl Lang at Yale and with Louis Horst and others associated with the Martha Graham Dance Company, at Connecticut College. Her knowledge and appreciation of beauty found particular expression not only in dance, but in interior design, especially of kitchens. Mary’s persona embodied a degree of vitality and love of learning, which came as close to everlastingness as any is likely to come. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jefferson White; two sons, Geoffrey and Byron; three grandsons, Christopher, Andrew and Colby; and two sisters, Bess Grevelle and Marcella Ashley. The entire family wishes to thank the staff of Cancer Care at Eastern Maine Medical Center for their combination of professional skills and personal support. Those who wish to remember Mary in a special way may make gifts in her name to the Oncology Support Foundation, P.O. Box 622, Orono, ME 04473.
