NORTHEAST HARBOR Dwight Lee Coombs, 59, died April 14, 2007, at an Ellsworth health care facility. He was born Dec. 25, 1947, in Bar Harbor, the son of Harold F. and Mar-guerite F. (Swan) Coombs Sr. Dwight was one of the founding clients of the Mount Desert Island Sheltered Work Shop, which later became known as Downeast Horizons. He was a lifetime mascot for the Northeast Harbor Fire and Ambulance Department, and enjoyed riding in the Memorial Day parade in the ambulance. Dwight and his friend, Richard Allen, were major supporters of the Mount Desert Island High School Trojan basketball team. He also enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics, especially bowling. Having been born on Christmas, he truly loved the fact that he could celebrate his birthday the same day. Dwight loved the “Wizard of Oz” and could probably be in the Guinness Book of World Records for having watched or listened to it more than anyone in the world. He loved music and some of his other favorites were Lawrence Welk and many other show tunes. Dwight is survived by his brother, Ernest S. Coombs and wife, Karen, of Northeast Harbor; a sister, Dolores Whitcomb of Bucksport; nieces and nephews, Terry, Roy, Harold III, Steve, Cindy, Bob, Sandra, David, Lynn, Mary Ellen, Susan, Bill Jr., Mike, Tracy and Bill. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Harold F. Coombs Jr., a sister, Deborah Clowes; and a nephew, Jimmy Coombs. Friends are invited to call 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. William M. “Mac” Bigelow Jr. presiding. Interment will be at Bayview Cemetery, Franklin.
