BANGOR – Earl R. Johnson, 97, died July 15, 2007, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. Earl Reginald Johnson was born Feb. 20, 1910, in Bangor, son of Edith Mae (Delaney) and William Alonzo Johnson. Earl was one of 11 children. Earl attended Bower Street, Cottage Street, Pond Street and Harlow Street schools. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1928. He was a member of ROTC, the orchestra and band. He was an accomplished trombonist and was a member of the Bangor High School Band that won the 1928 State Musical Festival, and was a member of a touring band that played in various Maine locals. He worked for Home Radio Co., from 1930 to 1936 and then opened Earl’s Radio Service, Broad Street, Bangor, which was to become a well-known service shop in the downtown area. Earl married his beloved wife, June V. Higgins, now deceased, at Grace Methodist Church, Bangor, where he had remained a member until his death. Earl is survived by three daughters, Sheila Durland of Clovis, N.M., Elizabeth and husband, Bob, of Enfield and Dawna and husband, David, of Madison; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held noon Wednesday, July 18, with the Rev. Kathy Macedo, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
