BANGOR and MASSACHUSETTS – Eben K. Stinchfield Jr., husband of Helen (Spaulding) Stinchfield, died Jan. 1, 2007, after a period of declining health and a major stroke in 2005. Mr. Stinchfield was born Oct. 31, 1921, in Bangor, the son of the late Eben K. and Mollie (Gilpatrick) Stinchfield. He resided in Massachusetts for 50 years. Later, he returned to Maine in 1999, before recently moving back to Massachusetts to be near his son. Mr. Stinchfield graduated from Bangor High School, Husson College, and the American International College, Springfield, Mass. During World War II, Mr. Stinchfield served with the U.S. Marine Corps. His tour of duty included the Pacific Theater and was a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima. He witnessed the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi. He was a member of the American Legion. Early in his career, he worked as an office manager in the tool steel industry for many years. Until his retirement in 1988, Mr. Stinchfield worked in the financial services department at Boston University. Mr. Stinchfield was an avid outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed gardening, traveling, playing his hammond organ and tropical fish. At a young age, he studied voice and performed professionally. He was a three-year volunteer with the Perkin’s School for the Blind, Watertown, Mass. In addition to his wife of 58 years, family members include his beloved two sons, Mark and his wife, Chris, of Nashua, N.H., and Peter and his wife, Denise, of Reading, Mass.; his granddaughter, Jessica Nasdahl of Stratham, N.H.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Eugene K. Stinchfield and Paul B. Stinchfield; his sister, Sarah Noyes; and two nieces, Mary Jane Noyes and Marilyn S. Stoner. A service of remembrance will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer, in the spring. Arrangements are handled by Brookings-Smith, 133 Center, St., Bangor.
