MACHIASPORT – Edmund “Ed” F. Murphy, 86, passed away May 16, 2005, at Down East Community Hospital after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 22, 1918, in Machiasport, the son of the late John F. and Geneva (Huntley) Murphy. He graduated from Machias High School. Ed then served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was an engineer on the M/V Mount Washington and a captain of the Sophie C. in New Hampshire. After he retired, Ed was a bus driver for Fort O’Brian Elementary School. Ed also was a lobster fisherman for many years. Ed enjoyed hunting and camping with the “boys”. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ruth E. Murphy; son, Michael E. Murphy Sr. and wife, Traci; grandchildren, Amanda Boynton and husband, Robert, Michael Murphy II and companion, Kirby Manchester, Natalie Murphy; and great-grandson, Justin Farnsworth, all of Machiasport; sister, Mary Wood of Jacksonville; special friends, Neal Sprague, Hoppy Moore, Billy Moore, and Bruce Moore; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter, Gail Marie Murphy; brother, Robert Murphy; and two sisters, Marion Clark and Pauline Berry. Visiting hours will take place 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2005, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias. A service will be held 2 p.m. at the funeral home Saturday, May 21, 2005 officiated by Pastor Dave Pouchot, with burial following at the Bayview Cemetery in Machiasport. There will be a gathering for family and friends following the service at Mike and Traci’s home in Machiasport.
