PATTEN – Edna F. (Beattie) (Cunningham) Bates, 92, died Feb. 29, 2004, at her home with her daughters at her side. She was born Oct. 26, 1911, in Millinocket, the daughter of Samuel and Evelyn (Sholler) Beattie. She graduated from Patten Academy in 1930, and was a bookkeeper for the Atlas Plywood and the J.M. Huber Co. for 25 years, and was an administrative secretary for the Cary Medical Center in Caribou for seven years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, the Rebecca’s and the Molunkus Valley Chapter No. 95 OES. Edna is survived by one son, Howard and his wife, Yolanda Cunningham, of Fort Lee N.J.; two daughters, Karen Bates and Robert White of Caribou, and Rae Bates of Patten; four grandchildren, Heidi Cunningham Pulice and Hans Cunningham of New Jersey, Mark White and Jen of Presque Isle, and Susan White of Caribou; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Dawne Bovino of Punta Gorda, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold S. Bates, in 1991; her parents; three sisters, Ida Mae, Verna and Trena Delisle; and one brother, Lawrence. The family would like to thank the women who were Edna’s home healthcare workers, especially Mona Craig and Kathy Neidbala, whose work enabled her to remain at home these last 12 years. Friends may call 3-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten, with funeral services being held at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Chandler Officiating. Spring interment will be in the Patten Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Veteran’s Memorial Library or to the Stetson Methodist Church.
