BROOKS – Edwin Ames Cross, 86, passed away peacefully April 27, 2008. He was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Searsmont, the son of Harold and Lottie (Batchelder) Cross. Ed lived a full life and had many occupations. He worked on farms as a young man until he entered the Air Force in 1942, serving in World War II. While in the service he received a medal of Good Conduct and European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. Ed worked for the state for many years before owning his own trucking company. He hauled milk for National Farmers Organization and also hauled tractor/trailer. In his later years, he sold wood and plowed driveways, which he did until his death. Ed was very active in the community. He was a member of Brooks Snowmobile Club and Brooks Booster Club. He was a past member of the Legion. Most days in the summer months you would find him mowing the town park. Ed is survived by his children, Faylene Turner and husband, Elwin, of Freedom, Meldon Gibbs of Brooks, Leroy Gibbs of Burnham, Rick Gibbs of Bangor, Deborah Burns and husband, Dan, of Pennsylvania, and Marilyn Carman of Brooks. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 39 years, two brothers, one sister, granddaughter and daughter-in-law. He will also be missed by his dog, Gabby. Family and friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial with military honors will be held after at Kenney Cemetery, Brooks.
