ORRINGTON and SEARSPORT – On Oct. 26, 2007, Jesus Christ our Lord came to Ed’s home and carried him home. He was a husband, father, veteran, friend and barber. He was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Rockland, the son of Alvenus and Elizabeth (Mackenzie) Cross. Ed became a very successful and self-educated man. He had a childhood accident that kept him from school and his family for more than two years. He served as a Merchant Marine during World War II; he and his wife, Jackie, owned and operated the Cross Nursing Home, Bay View Manor, Searsport. After that he owned and operated Ed’s Barber Shop, Searsport, until 1973. He won many town awards for his beautiful floral window boxes. He was a member of Searsport United Methodist Church, member and past district deputy president of the Odd Fellows, the Rebekahs and American Legion Post No. 43, Belfast. He served as the Superintendent of the Odd Fellows Home, Auburn, for nine years until which time he and Jackie retired back to the family home in Swanville. Ed was a quiet man, but had many loves. First and foremost was his wife of 50 years, Jackie and their daughters, Lani, Karen, Debbie and Andrea. Ed had a love for the outdoors. He loved his vegetable and flower gardens and his fruit trees. Ed was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved being outdoors and walking through his vegetable gardens. He also enjoyed the Saturday night card games with Dot and Sheldon and Gladys and Don. He’ll miss the cribbage that he and Dot would still play. He was predeceased by his wife, Jackie, in June 2001; also by all of his siblings, Sylvanus, Robert, Alvenus, Julia, Ellen, Francis and Henry; a grandson, Richard Ashey Jr.; and a nephew, Edwin C. Smith of Waterbury, Conn. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his daughters and spouses, Lani and Fred Uvezian of Bellingham, Mass., Karen and David Harrison of Verona Island, Debbie and Ron Wentworth of Hampden and Andrea and George Dickinson of Orrington; his grandchildren, spouses and great-grandchildren, Peter, Maria, Breah, Kylee and Nikita Farrington of Spotsylvania, Va.; Lisa, Sean, Jen, Jake and Kyle Holman of Saco; Daniel, Janice, Codi-Ann and Drew Farrington of Duluth, Minn.; Michael, Lisa and Mikey Went-worth and Anjelica Davenport of Hampden; Gregory Went-worth of Hampden; Laurie Brophy and Sheri Wheelock of Stetson; Sarah, Stewart, David and James Houston of Stonehaven, Scotland. Special family friends include, Flo Evans, Dot Collins, Gladys Ruttenberg, Rita Stone, Parker Clements and “Ma” Dickinson; also childhood buddy and ship mate, Clarence Roberts; members of Searsport and North Searsport Methodist Churches. He will also be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, friends; and special nephews, Robert Cross Jr. and spouse, Diane, of Naples, and Donnie Cross and Jeanie Gover of Rockland. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Vincent Michaud and to the Eastern Maine Medical Center Dialysis staff. The loving care that Ed received will never be forgotten. A committal service with military honors will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Cemetery, Swanville, with Pastor Stephen MacLeod, pastor of Searsport United Methodist Church, officiating. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wed-nesday at Searsport United Methodist Church, Searsport, conducted by Pastor Stephen MacLeod and Mrs. Mary Curtis. Everyone is invited to a continued time of fellowship and refreshments after the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
