AUGUSTA – Edwin D. Pickett, 72, died Aug. 13, 2005, at home, as he wished, surrounded by the family that he loved. He was born May 3, 1933, in Bangor, son of Arthur W. and Gertrude Pickett. They moved to Augusta, in 1936. Edwin has been married to Jean (Gallant) Pickett since 1956. Ed graduated from Cony High School in 1952 and from Higgins Classical Institute in 1953. He then attended the University of Maine. Ed was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Cony High School. He was a member of the Kennebec Valley Football Officials Association for 12 years and officiated for that many years. He was involved in coaching and administering junior sports in the Augusta area for many years. Ed spent 35 years with the Prudential Insurance Company of America from 1956 to 1991, serving as sales manager, vice president, and retiring as a district manager supervising five sales managers and a staff of 65 people. During his impressive career, he was awarded 26 Prestigious Academy of Honor awards and 24 Presidential Citations (the highest award at Prudential). He won the President’s Cup on five occasions for ranking number one in the entire Northeastern Home Office of Prudential, and was nominated manager of the Year for the Northeastern Home Office five times during his career, as well. Ed was elected and named as a director for three terms to serve on an advisory board for the Prudential Insurance Company. He was a career member of the Life Underwriters Association. Ed was a member of the Augusta Kiwanis Club for several years before being transferred and promoted by Prudential. He has been a member of the Augusta Elks Club for many years and a member of the Natanis Golf Club for more than 16 years. Ed was an inactive 3rd degree knight of the Knights of Columbus. Ed was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather who dedicated most of his life to the love and comfort of his family. His favorite passion was being with his family. He loved seeing ex-schoolmates and valued their friendship. Ed is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean (Gallant) Pickett, four children, daughter, Karen J. Saucier and husband, Richard, son, Paul H. Pickett and wife, Angela, son, Edwin J. Pickett and wife, Michelle, and daughter, Angela M. DeSchamp and husband, Peter. Ed has four granddaughters, Jennifer K. Sawyer and husband, Andrew, Rebecca A. Saucier, Sarah J. Saucier, and Susan E. Saucier. He has one grandson, Erick Edwin Pickett, and a step-grandson, Caleb D. McKenzie. Ed is survived by a brother, Robert Pickett and his wife, Sylvia, of Portland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Mary Pilsbury and her husband, Lloyd, and Margarite Brown. Ed has many surviving cousins, nieces and nephews. Since retirement, Ed and his wife, Jean, spent most of their winters in Florida, and enjoyed traveling and spending time together doing things they enjoyed. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Manchester.
