PORTLAND – Edwin F. Smith, 81, died Dec. 14, 2007, with his family by his side at Maine Medical Center. Edwin was born June 6, 1926, in Hampden, a son of Edwin L. and Faith I. Emerson Smith. He was a graduate of Brewer High School, Class of 1944. He graduated from University of Maine in Orono in 1950. He served in the Army during World War II and was in the European Theatre of Operations. Edwin worked for 15 years as vice president at Maine Cement Products from 1950 to 1965. From 1965 to 1992, he was part owner of Hascall and Hall, Inc. and was a special masonry contractor. Edwin was a member of the Portland Kiwanis Club, Associated General Contractors of Maine, Cumberland Club and a life member of the American Legion. Edwin and his wife wintered in Parrish, Fla., for many years. Edwin was also an avid gardener in his free time. He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Isabelle McCarthy Smith of Portland; daughters, Kathryn I. Smith of Scarborough and Deborah D. Smith of Portland; son, E. Terrance and wife, Barbara Linnehan Smith, of Portland; sister, Lelma Russell of Davis, Calif.; and brother, Alden Smith and wife, Barbara, of Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal St., Portland. Burial will be after the service at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland. Arrangements are made by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
