LAMOINE – Edwin R. Wuori, 87, died Friday, July 14, 2006, at his residence. He was born June 11, 1919, in Monson, the son of the late Richard and Maria (Wunsch) Wuori. Mr. Wuori was a U.S. veteran serving in the Army during World War II as a private first class with the 12th Engineer Combat Battalion. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus five, where he was a member of the Army Engineers and was active on the front lines. He was the recipient of four Bronze Service Stars. Mr. Wuori worked for the State of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries as a game warden for 21 years before retiring in 1971. He was the snowmobile safety coordinator for Hancock and Washington Counties in Maine during his retirement. He was very active with a lot of environmental causes. He enjoyed woodcarvings and paintings most of his life. Mr. Wuori was an avid fisherman and gardener. Mr. Wuori enjoyed traveling with his wife to Florida in the winter, Alaska, and Finland. He was well loved and respected in Amherst where he operated a vegetable stand with his surplus vegetables from his award-winning garden. He shared 63 years of marriage with Ruth (Jackson) Wuori. In addition to his wife, family members include a son, David Wuori of Lamoine; daughter, Patti McKenney of Lamoine; and his loving four-footed companion, Shebra. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a potluck memorial open house service in celebration of Edwin Wuori’s life 10 a.m. until late evening Saturday, July 22, at his residence, 449 Douglas Highway, Lamoine.
