CARMEL – Harold S. Hughes Sr., 86, died July 16, 2006, at a Bangor health-care facility. He was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Mapleton, a son of Enoch and Lula (Scribner) Hughes. He served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Bell, during World War II. Harold was a member of the Jubilee Family Worship Center in Newport, the Carmel American Legion and the Good Sam Club. He retired as a diesel electrician for the Maine Central Railroad. He will be remembered as an avid hunter and fisherman. Harold was predeceased by his first wife, Hazel L. Hughes in 1998; and by his second wife, Mavis Bragg Hughes in 2005. He is survived by two sons, Harold S. Hughes Jr. of Carmel and Anthony “Sam” Hughes of Skowhegan; two daughters, Elois “Lois” Gagliardo of Newport and Susan Bruce of Maryland; three brothers, Manfred and Sheldon Hughes, both of Rome, N.Y. and Donald Hughes of California; a sister, Dorothy Lawrence of Bronx, N.Y.; many grandchildren and great-granchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Marvin Graves of Carmel. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, at the Jubilee Family Worship Center, Newport Full Gospel Church. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
