PORTAGE LAKE – Madeline T. Holmes, 89, died unexpectedly, July 14, 2006, at her Portage Lake residence. She was born Nov. 30, 1916, at Portage Lake, the daughter of Oscar and Victoria (Madore) Bragdon. Madeline was employed for some time as a processor for Potato Service in Presque Isle. For 20 years she owned and operated Holmes Grocery Store in Portage. She is survived by one son, James Holmes of Winterport; two daughters, Joan Satterfield of Bolivar, Mo. and Beth Bell of The Villages, Fla.; two sisters, Cassie Sutherland of Garfield Plantation and Gladys Little of the Carolinas; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond A. Holmes; and by three sons, Wendell, Raynold and Thomas Holmes. Relatives and friends may call 1 p.m. Friday until time of service at the Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, 114 Exchange St., Ashland. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Nathan Gardiner officiating. Interment will be in the family lot at Portage Lake Municipal Cemetery.
