BAR HARBOR – Effie Elaine (Hodgkins) Staples, 71, died Feb. 6, 2006, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born May 6, 1934, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of John Dallas and Marcia (Hanscom) Hodgkins. Effie worked many years for the Clark Coal Company in Bar Harbor. She worked 10 years for the Thompson Island Information Center and she worked the last 11 years for Acadia Information Center. Effie also owned and operated her craft business “Busy Fingers.” She enjoyed her cottage on Molasses Pond, Whispering Pines and enjoyed many hours with her dog, Pampa. Effie is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Theodore Staples; three sons, Dennis Staples and his wife, Mary Jane, of Town Hill, Bruce Staples and his wife, Debra, of Trenton and Todd Staples and fiance, Patti Gray, of Town Hill; one brother, John “Bud” Hodgkins Jr.; and one sister, Evadna H. Moore, both of Salisbury Cove; seven grandchildren, Carrie Anne, Douglas, Christine, Bradley, Jonathan, Emily and Matthew; four great-grandchildren, Chase, Taner, Ryleigh and Lucean and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Elaine Crowley in 1989; and seven sisters, Helena Iverson in 1988, Elizabeth Young in 1993, Hilda Fields in 1996, Clarrissa Hodgkins in 1925, Harriett Fairbairn in 1985, Isabelle Blake in 1988 and Mary Beverly Reed in 1991. Friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Mount View Cemetery, Town Hill.
