MT. DESERT – Elaine H. Reddish, 66, died Jan. 1, 2004, at a Bangor hospital from complications after heart surgery. She was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Manset, the daughter of A. Victor and Ruby Linnis (Bryant) Higgins. Elaine graduated from Mount Desert High School, Northeast Harbor, the first class to be there all six years. She was a graduate of the University of Maine in Orono, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. She received her masters degree in education from Orono as well. She taught school in Bar Harbor, Mt. Desert and Trenton. Elaine was the owner, operator of A.V. Higgins Store, Antiques and Collectibles. She followed in Victor’s footsteps, who owned and operated it as a general store for 50 years. Elaine had been a member of the Mt. Desert Zoning Board, past member of the Mt. Desert School Board and the Teacher Recertification Board (LSDC). She was currently serving on the Somes Mynell Wildlife Sanctuary, DAR, Somesville Library Association, Mt. Desert Literary Club, a member of the Somesville United Meeting House, UCC, the Sewing Circle and secretary of the Brookside Cemetery Association. Elaine is survived by her husband of 43 years, Norris M. Reddish; one son, Ryan Reddish and wife, Susan, of Canton, Mass.; one daughter, Julianna Reddish Smith and husband, Jeffrey, of Mt. Desert; and three grandchildren, Courtney and Ally Reddish and Delaney Smith. She was predeceased by her parents and a very special aunt, Julia (Bryant) Smith. Services of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Somesville Union Meeting House, UCC, with the Rev. Victor Stanley officiating. Private interment will be at Brookside Cemetery, Mt. Desert.
