MILBRIDGE and BRISTOL, Conn. – Elaine Marie Hamm, 69, went to be with her Lord Sunday morning, May 25, 2008, at her home in Milbridge, after a long and courageous battle from complications following a stroke 16 months prior. She was born Sept. 11, 1938, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Harry and Rena Hafford. As a young adult, Mrs. Hamm resided in Bristol, Conn., with her beloved husband, Walter Hamm, where she worked for many years in daycare as a teacher. In 2000, she retired to Milbridge with her husband, Walter, where she enjoyed gardening, birds and music. As the family reflects on her passion of hummingbirds, they were reminded of how the hummingbird clearly symbolized the essence of Elaine, beautiful and strong, yet fragile and so amazing. She also enjoyed painting murals, pictures and birdhouses. She loved to cook and take pictures. She shared 35 years of marriage with Walter Hamm of Milbridge, formerly of Bristol, Conn. In addition to her husband, family members include her 11 children, Debbie Hamm, Vicki Bennett, Karen Koch, Jill St. Pierre and husband, Clem, Jacqueline McNutt and fiance, Mac DeMings, Robin Winot, Linda Miranda and husband, Eddie, Walter Hamm Jr., Nancy LaPoint, David Hamm and Sarah Hamm; 33 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, siblings, Alice, Harry, Sandra, Rodney, Thurston “Jay” and Pam; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be sadly missed by close friends, particularly Betty and Francis Hammond. She was predeceased by a son, David Lapoint; and a brother, Eric. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael Church, School Street, Cherryfield. A time of fellowship will be held immediately after the Mass in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Health Services, P.O. Box 425, Bangor, ME 04402 or Pleasant River Ambulance, 183 U.S. Highway 1, Columbia, ME 04623. A service of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge. www.bragdonkelley.com
