CARIBOU – Eldon C. Giles, died Feb. 20, 2005, at Caribou Veterans’ Home. He was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Passadumkeag, the son of Floyd and Florence Giles. Eldon was a graduate of Sherman High School, Aroostook State Teacher’s College in Presque Isle, and the University of Maine at Orono where he received his Master’s Degree in Education. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Eldon married Darlene Waddell in 1953, and together raised their three children. Eldon was the Biology teacher at Caribou High School for 24 years where he also taught Driver’s Education. He was a longstanding Varsity baseball coach at Caribou High School and served as Athletic Director for a time as well. Eldon enjoyed gardening, writing music, playing the trumpet and piano, the outdoors and carpentry. He was instrumental in seeing Little League Baseball established in Caribou and coached for several years thereafter. He was a member of the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, the Caribou Lions Club, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Eldon was involved with sports for much of his life and above all he was an athlete who, despite his burdens, inspired and humbled all those who knew and loved him in how he played the game. Eldon is survived by his wife, Laura Carter Giles of Mapleton; two sons, Dr. Tracy Giles of Portland, Kevin Giles and his wife, Paula, of Caribou; his daughter, Julie Ordway and her husband, Kirk, of South Portland; his brother, Duane Giles of Winterport; his sister, Althea Zimmerman of Hampden; four grandsons, Kyle, Tyler and Dustin Giles of Caribou, and Brandon McCrossin of South Portland; three granddaughters, Lindsey and Danielle Giles of Brunswick, and Kelley Hageman of South Portland; three step-sons, Kevin Carter and his wife, Jeana, Gary Carter and his wife, Sandra, Dennis Carter and his wife, Marilyn, all of Mapleton. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at the chapel of the Mockler Funeral Home, with the Pastor Bob Blackstone and the Rev. Lynne Josselyn, officiating. A reception will follow at the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church in Caribou. Spring interment will take place at the Sherman Mills Cemetery.
