CLIFTON – Eleanor Jane Merrill, 94, passed away Dec. 16, 2003, at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 21, 1909, in Malden, Mass., the second daughter of Lawrence and Jane (Lodge) Barrett. Eleanor resided in Melrose, Mass., with her husband of 50 years, Richard W. Merrill, before retiring to Clifton. She was a member and the organist of the Clifton United Baptist Church, Clifton, for 20 years and a member of the “Help Someone” Club and the Extension at the Eddington Community Church. Eleanor was also instrumental in establishing the Town of Clifton Library. Surviving are two children, Patricia A. MacKenzie and her husband, Edward, of Hidden Valley, Pa., and Jane S. Shuman and her husband, Walter, of Smithfield; five grandchildren, Gregg and Brian MacKenzie, Wendy (Shuman) Van Der Kerr, Elizabeth (Shuman) Smith and Brenda (Shuman) Vachon; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Norton of Malden, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Ethel Borwick. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at the Clifton United Baptist Church, Route 9, Clifton, with the Rev. William Stone, pastor, officiating. Burial at Maplewood Cemetery, Clifton, will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clifton United Baptist Church, 742 Airline Road, Clifton 04428.
