SHERMAN – Elgah Ruby Rand passed away March 31, 2008, at a nursing facility. She was born Nov. 18, 1917, the daughter of Rose Patterson Rand and Edward Weston Rand. She was raised on the family farm in Sherman. She graduated from Sherman High School; Ricker Junior College, Houlton; and later from Boston University. She received her master’s degree from Columbia, New York City. She entered the Waves during World War II. From 1939 to 1955, Elgah was a stenographer for College and Business, New York City, in the Waves in Washington, D.C., and UNESCO, Paris. In 1951 through 1954, she taught arts and crafts at a nursery school and kindergarten in Brussels, Belgium and very much enjoyed a tour of Europe. Elgah returned stateside, where she fulfilled her desire working with children on their level, taking from them as well as providing rich experiences in St. Monica, Calif., and Port Townsend, Wash. Surviving her is her beloved brother, Beverly Patterson Rand and his companion, Alice Briggs, of Island Falls; nieces and nephews, Stuart and his wife, Dotty, of Sherman and their children, Anna, Rebecca, Scott and Edward; her twin nieces, Betty Rand of Sherman and her daughter, Amanda, Beth Rand, of Newport and her children, Leslie, Lisa and Derrick, Duana Webb of Portland, Brian and his wife, Jane, of Windham, Mike and his wife, Joanne, of Bridgton, Debra and her husband, Derrick, of San Diego, Randy Webb and his wife, Gail, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a niece, Bonita Grant Staples of Sherman and her children, Carman and Clifton; many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews; a dear friend and caretaker, Jean Rough of Port Townsend, Wash.; and most recently her caring and loving friend and roommate, Lucy Cunliffe. She was predeceased by her parents; half sister, Etta Rand Grant; brother-in-law, Oliver Grant; half brother, Clifton Rand; sister-in-law, Roslyn Rand; sister, Ardyth Rand Webb; brother-in-law, Dwight Webb; and sister-in-law, Cora Stevens Rand. In keeping with the family wishes, a spring graveside service will be held in the family plot at Golden Ridge Cemetery. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls.
