ELIZABETH ‘BETTY’ JANE JONES CARIBOU – Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Jones, 80, died Oct. 19, 2005, at Cary Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 18, 1925, in Chicago, Ill. the daughter of Melville and Johanna (McMahon) MacDonald. Betty grew up in Chicago and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Woodrow Wilson College. She worked at Marshall Field Department Store and for Illinois Central Railroad until she married her husband of 58 years, Melbern Jones. She traveled extensively with her husband during his Air Force military career. She devoted her life to her family and over the years was involved in various activities such as the officers’ wives club, PTA, Brownies, Boy Scouts, community fund raisers, and campaigns for political candidates. Betty was an avid reader, enjoyed needle work, and was noted for her remarkable memory. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Melbern Jones, Lt. Col. USAF Ret. of Caribou; sons, Robert W. and wife, Jill Jones, of Caribou, Melbern Jr. and wife, Linda Jones, of Fort Fairfield; daughter, Lisa Jones of Bangor; four grandchildren, Marcie Jones, Ryan McDowell, Marie Jones and Andrew Jones; six great-grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and numerous great-stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. Family and friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Friday, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Caribou, with Fr. Jean-Paul LaBrie officiating. A reception will immediately follow the committal service at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Caribou.
