CASCO – Elizabeth “Betty” West Hancock, 87, of Meadow Road, passed away in Portland, Saturday, Oct. 30, after a brief illness. She was born in Bangor a daughter of Harry and Lida West Homans. In 1935, Betty graduated from Bangor High School. In 1939 she graduated from the University of Maine at Orono and until her death was very active in the alumni association. Betty taught at Hodgdon High School, Lewiston High School, and at the Lake Region Vocational Center. She had also worked at and was a member of the board of directors at Hancock Lumber. In 1945, Betty married Sumner Hancock who predeceased her in 1960. Betty was a founding and lifelong member of the Vondredi Club and also active in the Cumberland County Extension, Casco Village Church, and the Ladies Guild. She enjoyed playing Bridge, traveling, reading, needle crafts, being part of the Seeds of Peace community, watching her beloved Red Sox, visiting with friends and spending time with her family. Surviving are two sons, Douglas and his wife, Claire, of Bristol; Thomas and his wife, Holly, of Casco; four grandchildren, Dustin and his wife, Bethany, of Bristol, Cara Slifka and her husband, William, of Old Orchard Beach, Geoffrey and his wife, Jessica Bean, of Denmark, Evan and his fianc?e, Imogen Kemp, of England; her great-granddaughter, Tatum Hancock; her brother, Harrison Homans and his wife, Peggy; and was greatly loved by her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Gertrude McNally; her husband, John; and her companion of several years, Herbert “Spike” Leonard. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Road, Casco. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Casco Village Church on Route 121.
