LIMINGTON – Elizabeth Jane Haggerty, 66, of Limington, and Green Valley, Ariz., died with her family at their lake cottage in Maine on Oct. 25, 2003, after a long and courageous fight against multiple myeloma. Elizabeth was born March 17, 1937, in Portland, Me., the daughter of Ethel L. and Irving N. Pope. She graduated salutatorian at Falmouth High School and received a BS from the University of Maine, Orono, and a Masters of Education from the University of Southern Maine. She was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, Phi Kappa Phi national honor society, and was honored as an All Maine Woman. Her 25-year career in education began with teaching second grade at the Lyseth School in Portland, and third grade at the Norfork Elementary School in Connecticut. She finished her career as the reading specialist for 19 years at Old Town High School. In addition to teaching she founded the varsity tennis program at Old Town High School and coached the team for 12 years. She was a member of the Old Town United Methodist Church and the Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley. She is survived by her devoted husband of 41 years, Edward; her loving son and daughter, David of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jean Smail of Freeport; son-in-law, David Smail; and precious grandsons, Nathan and John Smail; sister, Nancy Perkins of South China; bother-in-law, Richard Haggerty and his wife, Julie, of South Portland. A celebration of Elizabeth’s life will be held at the South Freeport Church-United Church of Christ, 98 South Freeport Road, South Freeport, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, with a reception to follow. In honor of Elizabeth and her dedication to teaching, her family has founded a scholarship at Old Town High School for students heading to college who have overcome a challenge to reach this goal, a cause she championed in her teaching career.
