PRESQUE ISLE – Elizabeth K. Stewart, 97 1/2, died peacefully Dec. 17, 2006, with her family beside her at the Caribou Nursing Home. She was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, one of 12 children of Alfred and Maude (Broad) Kinney. Liz was known for having raised “more than a baseball team of boys.” She lost her firstborn just months after his birth, that was little William. In 2002 her youngest son, Roger Whitten died, then Dale and Lawrence “Ike” both in 2006. Each one of them took a portion of her heart with them when they left this earth. Mom left us with a lot of memories many of which we will gladly share with friends and family at her memorial service. One of those memories was of her not wanting to give up her Canadian citizenship. Her sister, our Aunt Dot, convinced her years ago that she would have to “bad mouth” Canada to become an American citizen. Mom being mom believed her and to this day she still had her visa. She has one surviving brother, Sam Kinney of Prince Rupert, British Columbia. She came to Maine to find employment and did as a housekeeper and cook. And cook she could, especially her doughnuts! But you could not talk about her unless you spoke of her grandchildren, all 34 of them! But it did not stop there, to date, she had 26 great-grandchildren. Each and everyone have a special place in her heart and are keepers of her memory. May she enjoy those who have gone before her and delight in her view of us from heaven. God bless you mom and grandmother, we will miss you. She is survived by five sons, Joseph Whitten and his wife, Germaine, of Crouseville, Jere Whitten of Presque Isle, Thomas Whitten and his wife, Susan, of Ohio, Louis Whitten and his wife, Connie, of Florida and James Whitten and his wife, Diane, of South Carolina; and a daughter, Dorothy Sines and her husband, Steven, of Castle Hill. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, with the Rev. Larry Palmer, officiating.
