CALAIS – Ella L. Sprague, 85, died April 1, 2008, at Atlantic Rehab. and Nursing Center, Calais. She was born April 9, 1922, in Marlborough, Mass., the daughter of Wilfred and Hazel (Perry) Nadreau. Ella married James “Herbert” Sprague, Aug. 24, 1963, in Manchester, N.H. Shortly afterwards, they moved back to Herbie’s hometown of Grand Lake Stream. In 1983, after the death of her husband, Ella returned to Mendon, Mass., to be near her relatives. In December 2007 after an illness, she moved to Washington Place and then Atlantic Rehab. and Nursing Center. During her years at Grand Lake Stream, Ella worked at local lodges, waitressing in the dining rooms and assisting with work in the cabins. Ella had such a wonderful sense of humor and was never at a lost to entertain everyone with a funny story or a humorous joke. She always wore a smile; it would be difficult to find a picture of her that didn’t prove just that. She was a helpful hand to anyone in need. Ella and her husband enjoyed many summers at Herbie’s Hideout on Wabassus Lake. She will be sadly missed by her family and her many friends at the senior citizen apartments in Medway, Mass., her home and her family for nearly 25 years. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her stepdaughter, Anne Sprague; her granddaughter, Kim Kneeland; and her brother-in-law, Charles Ghelli. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Ghelli of North Carolina; her nieces, Sandra Ghelli of Florida, and Joanne Retecki and her husband, Bruno, of North Carolina; a nephew, Kenny Ghelli of North Carolina; her “stepson,” Kenny Sprague and his wife, Karen, of Grand Lake Stream; granddaughters, Dr. Kellie Sprague of Needham, Mass., Kristina Sprague of Ellsworth, Kathi Ingalsbe of North Carolina, and Kristyn Royer of Washington; a grandson, Cory Kneeland of New Hampshire; several great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, many great-nieces and great-nephews; and two very special people in her life, Duane and Jackie Nelson of Mendon, Mass. Her funeral services will be held at a later date at St Joseph’s Cemetery, Medway, Mass. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais and Eastport. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.maysfuneralhome.com.
