CARIBOU – Ella Mae R. Thayer, 91, wife of the late Raymond Thayer, died Nov. 17, 2006, in Houlton. Ella Mae was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Woodland, the daughter of Charles and Ida (Barnes) Russell. She was a 1934 graduate of Caribou High School and the Presque Isle Normal School. Mrs. Thayer began her teaching career in 1937, at the Green Ridge School and then at the Madawaska Road School. She taught in a one-room school with all eight grades in the same room. She ended her teaching career at Teague Park School at the age of 75. Four generations of Caribou families were taught by Ella Mae. She started the Memorial Book Fund at the Caribou Public Library and was active in her school union. She was a member and past matron of Elizabeth Chapter OES, a member of the Henry B. Pratt Post No. 15 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and served as a Cub Scout leader. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond in 1969. She is survived by a son, Russell Thayer and his wife, Phyllis, of Sinclair; a daughter, Sally Stevens and her companion, Richard Morton, of Oakfield; grandchildren, Craig Thayer and wife, Sueanne and their children, Monique and Aaron, of Webster, N.H., Jason Fortin and wife, Sharolyn and their children, Kevin, Steven and Jason, of Sanbornton N.H., Jonathan Thayer and his companion, Amber Hampton, of Providence, R.I., Corpsman Terrance Thayer of Norfolk, Va., Julie St. Thomas and her husband, John, of Presque Isle and Petty Officer 1st Class Kirk Stevens and his wife, Katie and their son, Cole, of Hayes, Va.; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 9 a.m. Tuesday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, until time of services 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Mary Lou Brown officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mrs. Thayer may do so through Caribou Public Library.
