CUMBERLAND FORESIDE and BANGOR – Ellen (Hathorn) Files, 87, of Cumberland Foreside, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Brentwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Yarmouth. Ellen was born March 31, 1920, in Bangor, to the late Donald and Ruth Hathorn. She attended Bangor schools and graduated from Bangor High School in 1937. Ellen graduated from Westbrook Junior College, Portland, in 1939. Ellen married Richard Files of East Orange, N.J., Jan. 31, 1942, in Bangor. They moved back to Bangor in 1945 and remained there for 60 years. In 2003, Ellen and Richard moved to Cumberland Foreside to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Ellen was very involved in the Bangor community. She was a member of the junior league, serving as its president, Athene Club, Shakespeare Club, DAR, All Souls Church, Women’s Investment Club and PEO chapter B. Ellen and Richard raised four children in Bangor, spending their summers at Lucerne. The love of Ellen’s life was her husband and best friend, Richard. They were married 66 years and were an inspiration to all who met them. Ellen is survived by her husband, Richard of Cumberland Foreside; her daughters, Susan Tagg and her husband, Jim, of Hampton Falls, N.H., Judi Stevens of Yarmouth, and Deborah Dumas and her husband, Peter, of Scarborough; son, Richard “Kip” Files and his wife, Lorraine, of Rockland; sister-in-law, Hope Hathorn of Bangor; family friend, Vicki Swann; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Ellen was predeceased by her brother, Donald H. Hathorn Jr.; and her son-in-law, Greg Stevens. A celebration of Ellen’s life will be held in the spring at All Souls Congregational Church, Bangor.
