CALAIS – Ellery Francis Higgins, 82, died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Calais Regional Hospital. Ellery was born April 8, 1924, in Calais, son of the late Charles and Annie (Murdock) Higgins. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army 251st Medical Field Hospital in the South Pacific. Ellery was employed at Pickard’s Laundry for more than 25 years. After Pickards closed, he was employed at Buccaneer Duty Free Shop for several years, then as the sexton for Immaculate Conception R.C. Church. Ellery was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, a 4th Degree Knight with Council No. 149 Knights of Columbus, and a lifetime member of Sherman Bros. Post No. 3 American Legion. He enjoyed puttering around his yard and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Ellery was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Higgins. Surviving are his loving wife, Margaret (Frye) Higgins; a son, Peter Higgins and wife, Norma, of Calais; three daughters, Patricia Lowell and Joanne Middlemiss, both of Phoenix, and Kathleen Copp and husband, Charles, of Westbrook; four grandchildren, Geoffrey Lowell, Natalie and Jason Copp and Megan Higgins; seven great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Lawrence Higgins of Nashua, N.H. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where the Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church, Calais Avenue, by Fr. Frank Morin. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
