ELLIS ROWE ORLAND – Ellis Rowe, 59, master boat builder and proprietor of Rowe Boats of Orland, died Sunday morning, Sept. 10, 2006, surrounded by family at his home in Orland. Ellis was born and raised in Wilmington, N.C. He did a stint in the U.S. Navy as a sea bee diver, stationed in Panama. Ellis, a man of adventure, lived life on his own terms. He also resided in Virginia, Florida and the Bahamas, and spent a couple of years on a sailboat. He survived being capsized in a white squall between Florida and the Bahamas, and he loved to tell the tale. He graduated from Daytona Beach Community College with a degree in photography and studied boat building with renowned boat builder and designer, D.C. Bud McIntosh of Dover, N.H. While living an authentic “back to the land” lifestyle in Wells, during the late 70s and early 80s, he built The Piscataqua River Gundalow, a sailing barge, which is the only gundalow now in existence. He also built the yawl boat for the USS Constitution. For the past 15 years, Ellis had his own wooden boat shop in Orland. In recent years, he taught boat building and repair at the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin and San Francisco. In 2005, Ellis wrote a series of “how to” articles for Wooden Boat magazine on building the Simmons Sea Skiff. He is survived by his mother, Hazel Eakins of Wilmington, N.C.; his sister, Margaret “Sissy” Hull and his brother-in-law, Bill Hull, of Hampstead, N.C.; his son, Ben Rowe of Castle Hayne, N.C.; his daughter, Becky Rowe, recently of the U.S. Virgin Islands; his son, Brendan Rowe of Portland; his sweetheart, Marian Allen of Orland; his stepchildren, Jonas and Kelly Allen of Portland and Heather (Allen) Descollonges of Stanford, Calif.; his godson, Pascal Descollonges of Stanford, Calif.; his lifelong pal and fellow adventurer, Rick Owens of Deer Isle; and Ellis’ border collie and shop manager, Jack. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to National Cancer Society, Border Collie Rescue or the Wooden Boat School. Arrangements by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
