PRESQUE ISLE – Elsie C. Johnson, 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at a Mars Hill health care facility. She was born Aug. 8, 1914, in Hall Quarry, St. George, the daughter of Charles T. and Mary (Hillgrove) Johnson. She lived a good part of her life in Presque Isle and was a member of the State Street Baptist Church. Elsie graduated from St. George High School in 1933. She graduated from Providence Bible Institute, Barrington, R.I., in 1939. She then attended Evangeline Booth Hospital, Massachusetts and graduated in 1941, where she worked as a nurse from 1941 to 1944. She also worked as a nurse in Allentown, Mass., in 1944. From 1944 to 1979, Elsie was employed by American Missionary Fellowship as a missionary in Aroostook County. She retired from the mission Dec. 31, 1979. She is survived by two brothers, Edsel L. Johnson of Fitchburg, Mass., and Vincent T. Johnson of Worcester, Mass.; a sister Marianna J. Tusia of Fitchburg, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. Relative and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Michel Shaw of the State Street Baptist Church. A reception will be held after the service in the gathering room of the funeral home. Spring interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery.
