MAXFIELD – Elsie M. Sage, 89, beloved wife of Gerald Sage Sr., passed away unexpectedly Aug. 16, 2006, at a Lincoln hospital. She was born July 17, 1917, in North New Portland, the daughter of Ernest and Hattie (Burns) Dunton. Elsie was a graduate of Skowhegan High School. She married Gerald Sage Jan. 1, 1942 and after raising her family, returned to work. She worked at G. E. Goding and Lincoln Pulp & Paper, accounting and payroll. She had served as a school board member for the town of Maxfield and was the first woman to become a selectperson for the town of Maxfield. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, was an avid reader and loved her flower gardens. In addition to being the beloved wife of 64 years of Gerald, she was the mother of Peggy Knowles and her husband, Brian, of Palmyra, Marjorie Sage of Maxfield and Gerald Sage Jr. and his wife, Darlene, of Lincoln; the grandmother of Jolie Hatch, Carolyn Donaldson, Cathy Knowles, Jennifer Cassio, Jeanne Champion and Lindsay Cooper; great-grandmother of Lacey, Lauren, Jade, Allie, Casey, Sam, Jason, Rosie, Alydia and Brooke. She also leaves a special niece, Deb Dunton; as well as a sister, Arlene Mitchell; and brothers, Kenneth Dunton and George Dunton. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Sage; three sisters, Crystal, Helen and Isabelle; and a brother, Richard. Friends and family may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Howland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Elsie M. Sage Memorial Library at the Community Center, Maxfield.
