WINTER HARBOR – Elwin R. Lindsey, 81, died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, in Winter Harbor. He was born March 28, 1923, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of Charles F. and Amber M. (Fober) Lindsey. Elwin was a member of the Union Congregational Church in Hancock and was a member and past president of the Winter Harbor Historical Society. He served in the Army during World War II, and was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theatre Ribbon, and the Victory Ribbon. Elwin was educated in Iowa schools and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College. After teaching for a few years, he attended Drake University and earned a Certificate in Actuarial Science. Elwin then worked for 32 years as an Actuary for Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance Company in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1983, he and his wife, Barbara retired, splitting their time between Winter Harbor, Maine and Naples, Florida. Elwin is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara (Barton) Lindsey of Winter Harbor; three daughters, Janice K. Lindsey of Elmore, Ala., Claudia F. Lindsey of West Hartford, Conn., and Clare B. Lindsey of Southington, Conn.; and a granddaughter, Katherine L. Fotos. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Union Congregational Church, U.S. Route 1, Hancock, with the Rev. John Holt, pastor, officiating. Spring interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Winter Harbor. Gifts in memory of Elwin may be sent to the Union Congregational Church, attn. Betty Lewis, P.O. Box 98, Hancock, ME 04640. Cremation arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
