SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Emily C. Black, 78, died April 3, 2004, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of Jasper B. and Ruth M. (Hodgdon) Shaw. Emily’s early years were spent growing up in York. She moved to Southwest Harbor when she was 18 to work at the Claremont Hotel. She later cleaned for summer and local residence in town. She loved people and enjoyed walking downtown for the mail and visiting. Emily did the bookkeeping for Coastal Disposal, which her husband and son owned and operated. She was a great animal lover and enjoyed her dog, Jewel, cat, Kitty Cat and her bird, Johnny. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, Southwest Harbor, and attended the Church of Life and Praise, Ellsworth. She is survived by her children which she loved, Fred E. Black, of Southwest Harbor, and Joyce Spofford and husband, Russell, of Lamoine; two stepgrandchildren, Katrina and Danny Spofford; and a great-grandson, Ezra; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Hamor and husband, Steven Sr., and family of Northeast Harbor, and Lurlene Fowler and family of Surry. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick M. Black; and two aunts, Doris Mitchell and Althea Mussetti. Friends are invited to call 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, at Jordan-Fernald Funeral home, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, with Pastor James Heard presiding. Interment will be at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor.
