ENFIELD – Ernest A. Lowell, 80, passed peacefully July 17, 2006, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. E.A. was born Aug. 28, 1925, in Lee, the son of Vaughn Albert and Helen (Averill) Lowell. E.A. grew up in Lee and graduated from Lee Academy in 1943 and entered the U.S. Navy directly, where he served in the Air Corps until 1946. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1950, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, he returned to Lee Academy as a physical education instructor, basketball coach and dorm master. Later he served a similar position in Fort Kent before becoming the recreational director in East Millinocket. During this time he became an eastern Maine basketball official. In 1961, he started a 20-year tenure as proprietor of Lakeside Recreation Center in Lincoln. He served as president of the Eastern Maine Candlepin Bowling Association and helped find, create and promote a number of youth and bowling programs and adult leagues. He coached high school boys’ and girls’ bowling teams to numerous state and world championships. E.A. became further involved in local education by serving on the Maine School Administrative District No. 67 board as well as chairman for several years and later served on the board of Region III Vocational District. He was past president of the Directors of Maine Association of Vocational Administrators and a member and past president of Rotary International. From 1982 to 1990, he continued his service to area youth as director of Region III Vocational District and again as interim director from 1996 to 1997. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and spending time with family and friends at Mack Hill. In all he did, he strived to make a difference in peoples’ lives, especially those of the youth. He lived by his favorite quote: “I expect to pass this way only once, therefore, any good I can do for my fellow man let me do it now, for I shall not pass this way again.” He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Althea (Applebee). In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Tom Lowell and his wife, Sandy Shipley, of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter, Lynn Lowell of Enfield; granddaughter, Karen Parlee of Tampa, Fla.; brother, Vaughn Lowell and his wife, Margaret, of Bucksport; and several in-laws, outlaws and other cousins, nieces and nephews.
