ETNA – Ernest David Ellison, 76, passed away peacefully Sept. 29, 2005, at his Etna home after a long and brave fight with Parkinson’s disease. He was born May 1, 1929, in East Orange, N.J., the son of Ernest C. and Emma Catherine (Simmons) Ellison. “Ernie” served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years may of those years as a senior master sergeant. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Award and two Bronze Stars for his service in Vietnam. Ernie met Betty Masterman in England in 1952, they were married in England in 1954 in the first double ring ceremony ever heard of at that time. He was and avid fly fisherman and tied his own flies four of which were published in the “American Fly Tyer” magazine. After his retirement from the Air Force he worked at the Bangor Post Office for 19 years as a mail handler. He was a member of the Carmel Union Congregational Church and served as a deacon and many other committees. While serving as a deacon he gave a sermon and said, “…a man may go to heaven without riches, learning, honor, or friends but he can never go without Christ…” He was a member of Benevolent Masonic Lodge in Carmel. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Betty Ellison of Etna; one son and his wife, John D. and Phyllis Ellison of Newport; two granddaughters, Allison M. Harris and her husband, Charles, of Bangor and Tiffany L. Ellison of Bangor; three great-grandsons, Gene David, Kyle David, and Jeremy Frank, all of Bangor; one sister and her husband, Marilyn and George Gulesian of North Carolina; two brothers, Thomas Ellison of Florida and William Ellison of New Hampshire; several nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by close friends who never forgot him, Robert and Terry Bedard and Bill and LaVerna Bovee. Memorial services with Military Honors will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Carmel Union Church with Pastor Burt Williams and members of Benevolent Masonic Lodge officiating. Burial will be private. The family wants to give thanks to Hospice of Eastern Maine for their “outstanding care.” In lieu of flowers friends may make memorial donations to the Deacon’s Fund at the Carmel Union Church, Carmel ME.
