WINTHROP – Ernest D. Schmitt Sr., 52, of Bishop Street, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at his home. He was born June 28, 1954, in Teaneck, N.J., the son of Eugene and Anna (McBreen) Schmitt. Ernie graduated from Winthrop High School, Class of 1972, where he played soccer and candlepin bowling. He had also received the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness Award, was awarded Best Driver at the Driver Rodeo in 1972 and was on the honor roll. He had worked in the maintenance department at Kents Hill School, and most recently had worked stocking shelves for Wal-Mart in Augusta. He was a woodworker, carpenter and outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by a son, Eugene D. Schmitt Jr. of Winthrop; a daughter, Amanda DeRaps of Albion; two brothers, Eugene H. Schmitt Jr. of Litchfield and Edwin Schmitt of Orrington; three sisters, Roberta Schmitt of Winthrop, Dorothy Best of Whitefield and Maggi Berry of Hollis Center; two granddaughters, Lily and Ally DeRaps; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Visiting hours will be held noon-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Roberts Funeral Home, 26 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. At his request, there will be no services.
