PORTLAND – Ernest M. Harmon, 64, passed away with peace in his heart and went to be with the Lord Wednesday June 20, 2007. Ernie was born May 7, 1943, in Milo, the son of Woodrow J. Sr. and Drucilla (Livingston) Harmon. Ernie was a resident of Portland for 21 years and previously a resident of Bangor for 13 years. He was a graduate of Milo High School and the University of Maine. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a helicopter crew chief. After being discharged from the military, he worked for Scott Paper Co. at Spencer Bay on Moosehead Lake. He married the love of his life, Carla (Hamlin) Harmon June 28, 1969, and they would have celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary this month. Upon graduating from college, he went to work for New England Telephone Co. and retired after 30 years. Ernie was a man of many interests. He was a dedicated fan of Deering High School athletics, especially the boy’s basketball team. Ernie served as the official scorekeeper for the team and as league statistician. Ernie was very proud to be a part of the Deering team that won the State Championship in 2006. He was also an avid NASCAR fan; especially the No. 3 car of Dale Earnhardt Sr. Ernie was also a registered Maine guide and shared his love for the outdoors with his three sons. They shared many memories of fishing trips to the Moosehead area, the Rangeley area and to the family camp at Schoodic Lake and hunting memories at Camp Keezer, in Dover-Foxcroft, Snare Brook, and “KI.” He loved to fly and to travel; Arizona was one of his favorite places. Ernie was a man of great character and will be missed dearly by all. He was predeceased by his father. In addition to his wife, Carla, he leaves his mother, Drucilla, both of Portland; his three sons, Matthew and his girlfriend, Emily, of Portland, Anthony and his wife, Angie (Utterback) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Andrew and his wife, Lindsay (Porter), of Hampden; brother, Woodrow J. Jr. “Jim” and his wife, Lorraine, of Venus, Fla.; sisters, Glennyse and her husband, Michael Mulherin, of Bar Mills, and Phyllis Harmon of Dover-Foxcroft; many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Ernie’s life will be held 4 p.m. Friday, June 22, at one of his favorite places, the Deering High School gymnasium. Committal services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made for a scholarship in Ernie’s memory at Deering High School, care of Gary Groves, Athletic Director, Deering High School, 370 Stevens Ave., Portland, ME 04103.
