NEWPORT – Ernest “Tim” Emery, 88, died Jan. 8, 2008, at a Pittsfield hos-pital. He was born Feb. 5, 1919, in St. Albans, a son of Ernest and Lillian (Gould) Emery Sr. He served in the National Guard in Newport and the U.S. Army. A World War II veteran, he served as an automotive mechanic 014, Tec 4 H.Q. Co, the 2nd Battalion, 103rd Infantry, 43 Division from 1941 to 1945. He was in active combat in Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands, Luzon, New Guinea, and the Philippines, where he was wounded in action. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, America Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign ribbons, Combat Infantryman Badge, Four Bronze Stars, and Pearl Pin for the Philippine Liberation. In 1946, Tim married Iva (White) Weeks of Newport, where they lived and raised their family. In later years and until their health declined, they wintered in Florida. Tim retired in 1981, after 31 years at FayScott, Dexter, where he was a member of FayScott Union IAM No. 1696. In earlier years, he had worked for D.E. Cummings Woolen Mill, Newport, for 10 years. He was a member of Barrows-Skidgel American Legion Post No. 105, Newport; Disabled American Veterans; VFW Post No. 15020; Sebasticook Valley Grange, Newport; Meridian Splendor No. 306, AF & AM Masons; and Old Hickory Odd Fellows. He and Iva enjoyed fishing at Lobster Lake and at their camp on Wilson Pond. He was an avid hunter for deer, moose and bear, and was proud of his many trophies. He got his last moose with his grandson, Kevin, when he was in his 70s and his last deer when he was 82. Tim enjoyed his family, eating out and many family gatherings. He always had a nice garden and helped with the canning and pickling. He was the family handyman and could fix almost anything. He was predeceased by his wife, Iva, in 2002; two brothers, Everett and Ray Emery; one sister, Christina Staples; a brother-in-law, Clyde Staples, a great-grandson, Elvin Ward III; and his special little dog, Chuckie. He is survived by four daughters, Evelyn Adamek and husband, Milan, of Gardiner, Carol Price of Newport, Patricia Humphrey and husband, Richard, and Joyce McLaggan and husband, Delbert, all of Detroit; a brother, Arthur Emery and wife, Nancy, of Lake City, Fla.; six grandchildren, Kevin McLaggan and wife, Annette, Debora McLaggan and fianc?, Warren Lund, Clinton Hurlburt and fianc?e, Sara Brooks, Richard Tibbetts Jr. and wife, Amy, Pamela Jean Ward and husband, Elvin, Lorraine Leigh Spaulding and husband, James; three great-grandchildren, Kyle McLaggan, Heather Hurlburt and Christine Ward.; one great-great-grand-daughter, Ashley Joan Ward; several nieces and nephews; and good friends, Russ Cahill and Faye Towle. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home 1 p.m. until time of services. A military committal service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Newport, in the spring.
