ERNESTINE E. McKAY PRESQUE ISLE – Ernestine E. McKay, 95, died Monday afternoon May 23, 2005, at a Presque Isle hospital. She was born March 2, 1910, in Presque Isle, the daughter of Harry L. and Nellie (Russell) McKay. Miss McKay was a teacher for 42 years; principal of the Training Elementary School in Presque Isle for 22 years, and retired in 1971.She was a MTA delegate to NEA Convention in San Francisco in 1939, President of the Presque Isle Teachers’ Club, president of the State of Maine Elementary Principals’ 1953-1954, president of the Aroostook County Principals Association, Charter member of the B.P.W., member of the ethics and nominating Committee of the State Teachers Association 1961. She received her master’s degree in education from the University of Maine Aug. 18, 1967. Ernestine was a long time cancer survivor. She is survived by three nieces, Jean Litsch of Presque Isle, Nelli McCarthy of Vernon , Conn., Barbara Currier and her husband, Tim of Caribou; great-nieces, Jennifer Ayer of Caribou, Carleen Elliott and Laureen Carlisle, both of Presque Isle; a great-nephew, Dale Currier of Berlin, N.H. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle, with the Rev. Susan Murphy, officiating. Those who wish may donate in Miss McKay’s memory to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086, the American Heart Assoc. Northeast Affiliate, 343 Gorham Rd., South Portland, ME 04106, or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home.
