JAMES S. NICHOLS CASTINE – James Stinson Nichols, 77, died May 20, 2005, at Castine. He was born Aug. 2, 1927, in Waterville. He attended Cony High School and was a veteran of World War II. For more than 25 years he was associated in the family business of Nichols Pontiac, Augusta, and later settled in Shelburne, Vt., where he pursued a career in real estate. In 1984, he and his wife, Jane, returned to her family homestead in Castine and raised sheep and pursued other farm-related activities to his great satisfaction. When farming activities slowed down his golfing was gearing up and he became very active with the Castine Golf Club. His unique talent for making everybody feel special will be remembered by everyone he touched. Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Jane (Switzer) Nichols of Castine; Jane’s children, Lisa Haugen and her husband, Patrick of Castine, and Lars Rost and his wife, Shelley, of Cumberland; James’ children, Jayne Cummings and her husband, Bruce, of Augusta, Cindy Roderick and her husband, Roger, of Orleans, Mass., Louise Ashby and her husband, Burt, of South China, and James A. Nichols of Augusta; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Perkins Street, Castine.
