TOPSFIELD – Erold J. Getchell, 87, died Jan. 11, 2006, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport, after a short illness. He was born July 2, 1918, in Topsfield, the son of Edger A. and Lottie Kneeland Getchell. As a young boy he moved with his family to Medfield, Mass., where on Dec. 16, 1939, he enlisted in the Army, 35th Infantry 25th Quartermaster Corp. He was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 11, 1941, then went on to fight in the South Pacific until his discharge, May 20, 1945. In 1948, he moved back to Topsfield, with wife and son to build their home and live most of his life. Erold worked for many years for the Dead River Pulp Co., also with his brother running a service station and garage in Santa Ana, Calif. Also, spent time with the Maine forestry as a tower watchman on Musquash Mountain and retired from the Maine Highway Department in the late 80s. Erold was preceded by his wife of 59 years, Leta (Noyes) Getchell in May of 2005. He is survived by one sister, Margerete Sutcliffe of New Hampshire; only son, David and his wife, June Getchell, of Norridgewock; two grandchildren, Timothy Getchell and his wife, Janette, of Brooklyn, Maryland and Kimberly Getchell and her significant other, David Pease, of Camden; and five great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Brianna Getchell, Aaron, Kaitlynn and Davin Pease. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Saturday, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Sunday, with Brian Godwin, officiating.
