ORIENT- Erwin Laurence “Larry” Bonney, 81, died unexpectedly Feb. 8, 2006, in Orient. He was born March 15, 1924, in Mechanic Falls, the son of Leon E. And Nellie (Hart) Bonney. He attended schools in Mechanic Falls and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Mary “Marie” Flynn July 4, 1946, in Mechanic Falls. He worked as a district warden for the Maine Department of Inland Fish and Wildlife from 1949-1973. In his early career he was an avid outdoorsman who traveled by snowshoes and dogsled in the days before snowmobiles. He spent many hours in the Maine woods and on the Newfoundland barrens. After his retirement he held a number of jobs in the commercial fishing industry in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and he was a security guard. He served as a member of the Board of Selectmen in Orient for several years. He was a major contributor in providing statistical information for Orient’s 2002 Town Report, when he served as Chairman of the Board, which received Maine Municipal Association’s highest honor, the Supreme Award, which goes to the best in Maine among like-sized municipalities. He also contributed endless hours towards implementing Orient’s enhanced 911 service. His passions in life included his wife, providing for his family and his love for nature. He is survived by seven children, Forrest of New Sharon, Bonita Stevenson of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Preston of East Ampton, N.J., Aleta Bonney of Jacksonville, Fla., Perry of Rosharon, Texas, James of Houlton and Sean of Westbrook; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie July 18, 2005. He will be remembered for his dedication to his job as a warden and for the enthusiasm of his many interests and hobbies. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Clay Funeral Home-Bartlett Chapel, 24 Houlton Rd., Danforth, with the Rev. Robert Johnston, officiating.
