MACHIAS – Esther A. Johnson, 88, passed away July 22, 2005, at Marshall Healthcare Facility, after a brief illness. She was born April 14, 1917, in Machias, the daughter of the late Howard C. and Marcia (Johnson) Armstrong. Esther worked at the Green-land Motel for many years in the office as the manager. She also worked at Joyce’s Lobster House. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Bucks Harbor Grange. She was a member of the Baptist Church in East Machias for many years. Esther was known for her skills in crocheting and knitting. She made hundreds of afghans that she gave away to family, friends, nurses, doctors, and even to the governor. Esther’s home was an open house to her family, friends, and neighbors who enjoyed coming to visit. She is survived by a son, Donald Johnson and wife, Barbara, of East Machias; two granddaughters, Tammy Armstrong and husband, Bradford, of Conway, N.H., and Terry Joy and husband, Brian, of Scarborough; three great-grand-children, Kayla and Olivia Joy, and Kristi Brown; and many, many, dear friends too numerous to mention. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick D. Johnson, in January of 1973. Visiting hours will be held 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2005, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home in Machias. At 6 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home, the members of the Machias Chapter No. 83 Order of the Eastern Star will be holding a service. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Dan Michaud. Burial will follow at Bucks Harbor Cemetery.
