MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – Esther Thurston Williams born Aug. 11, 1907, in Southwest Harbor. She passed away April 27, 2005, in Mount Vernon, Wash., of complications from pneumonia. Esther was healthy, happy, and active until shortly before her death. Esther was born and raised in Southwest Harbor, the daughter of Eugene and Alice Thurston. She is survived in Southwest Harbor by her sisters, Ruth Grindle and Elizabeth King, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary; and brother, Gene. Esther married William “Bill” Williams in November 1938, in Southwest Harbor. Bill was in the service and they traveled widely, living at many military posts during their 57 years of marriage. Bill died in 1996 in California and Esther moved to Washington State. Esther is survived by her daughter, Barbara Roth of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter, JoAnn Angevine of Mount Vernon, Wash.; and son, Thurston Williams of Upper Lake, Calif.; along with six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She always loved her Southwest Harbor family and friends and longed to return here. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 25, at the Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, in Mount Desert, followed by lunch, after which the family will accompany Esther to the family graveside where she will be laid to rest. Memorials may be made to the Southwest Harbor Public Library.
