GRAY BURGESS OAKLAND – Ethel Garland Gray Burgess, formerly of Hermon, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at Maine General Medical Center, Waterville. She was born Jan. 16, 1925, in Otis, the daughter of Andrew and Zelma (White) Garland of Hermon. She graduated from Hermon High School in 1948, after taking her junior year off to participate in the war effort as one of the “Rosie the Riveter’s” at Bath Iron Works. She then went on to attend and graduate from Webber School of Nursing in the Nurse Cadet Program at Webber Hospital, Biddeford. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Hermon. Ethel spent many years nursing at Eastern Maine Medical Center and Bangor Osteopathic Hospital, was director at Bangor Mental Health Institute and supervisor of the American Red Cross division, Bangor. She was also the owner of Small World Nursery, Bangor, until her retirement. She was the much loved mother of Myron Gray Jr. and Dennis Gray, both of Carmel, Anne Hammond, Kathy Whitney, JoAnne Webber, all of Oakland and Jayne Gray of Farmingdale; and a daughter, Joan Leslie, predeceased her. She is survived by her sisters, Norma Brill of Ormand Beach, Fla., Patricia Gray of Bangor and Mary Gammell of Omaha, Neb.; and a brother, Robert Garland of Newport. Her brothers, Lawrence Garland and Andrew Garland predeceased her. All were greatly loved by her. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many special friends, who gave her great comfort and joy. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at Blessed Hope Advent Christian Church, 10 Pleasant St., Waterville. A gathering of friends and family will be held after the service at the church family center. Flowers may be sent to the church or donations may be made to Hospice Volunteers of Waterville, 304 Main St., Waterville, ME 04901. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home, Oakland.
