NEWPORT and BEALS – Ethel Kelley Beal Backman joined her beloved son and daughter in heaven, Oct. 20, 2003. She was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Beals, and was the last living child of Ami and Mary Ann Beal. Ethel is survived by eight grandchildren, Gordon Harris Powell of Grandy, N.C., Ethel Marie Powell Johnson and her husband, Dwayne, of Grandy, Irene Lynn Merchant Edwards and her husband, Casey, of Youngstown, Ohio, Lisa Ann Merchant Mitchell of Beals, Steven Austin Merchant of Beals, Dixie Renee Backman Beaudoin and her husband, Jay, of Pembroke, Joel Harris Backman of Beals, and Terrilyn Lee Backman Bassett and her fianc‚e, Daniel Ledoux, of Southport, N.C. She is also survived by an honorary “grandchild”, Jerry Keherl and his wife, Donna, of Newport; 14 great-grandchildren; Mariann and Jessica Johnson, John and Justin Edwards, Reggie Mitchell, Caylin, Jay II, and Benjamin Beaudoin, Amanda and Shaena Backman, Jeremy Bassett, Kade, K-Leigh and Paden Ledoux. Ethel grew up on Beals and graduated from Beals High School. She was predeceased by the father of her children, Bernard Backman; and their children, Gordon Harris Backman, and Mary Ann Backman Merchant. Ethel attended the University of Maine at Machias. After graduating she taught for 19 years at Hartland Consolidated School. During this time she received her masters degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono. Ethel was a spiritual person and found great peace reading her Bible. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16 Visitation will be 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at her family church, the Advent Christian Church of Beals, with the celebration of her life to be held at 1 p.m. Those wishing to may make a donation to the charity of their choice. Arrangements are in the care of Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias.
