SULLIVAN – Ethel S. Rice, 78, beloved wife of Emerson Rice, went peacefully to be with the Lord, early Wednesday morning, Aug. 17, 2005. She was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Sullivan, the daughter of Frank L. and Dora M. (Martin) Farrin. Ethel loved her church family, friends and community. She was Sunday School Superintendent and was involved for many years at the Ashville Community Church. Ethel loved Siwawas. She also headed up the John Dority, Jr. Grange in Sullivan and was a sixth degree Granger, holding many offices over the years. She was involved in “On Stage at the Grange,” the Sullivan Police Department, and the Sullivan Bicentennial Committee. Ethel was an avid dancer in her younger years. She and her husband never missed a Saturday night dance. Ethel loved doing crafts and baking for church and grange fundraisers. Her smile and laughter lit up a room. She will be greatly missed as a wife, a mom and as Nanna. She lived most of her life in the home she was born in. In later life she was lovingly cared for by her husband. When it was impossible for her to remain at home, she was lovingly cared for by all the staff at Courtland Rehabilitation and Living Center. Ethel is survived by her best friend and lifemate, Emerson Rice of Sullivan; a daughter, Valerie Rice of Sullivan; a son, Dennis Rice and his wife, Barbara Ann, of Sullivan; six grandchildren, Russell Grindle and his wife, Rita, of Blue Hill, Nanette Grant and her husband, Ronald, of Orland, Yvette Grindle of Lakeland, Fla., Tamara Peterson and her friend, Doug, of Ellsworth, Florence Rice of Gouldsboro, and Jessica Rice and her friend, Brad, of Gouldsboro; 10 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Elizabeth and Roger Grindle, of Blue Hill, Jacob Grant, U.S.M.C and his wife, Nicole, of Okinawa, Japan, Jennifer and Jan Marie Grant, of Orland, Noel Farley, Rebecca and Richard Peterson of Ellsworth, and Ozzie Blyther of Gouldsboro; a great-great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Bridges of Blue Hill; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Clyde Farrin; a sister, Emily Preble; a granddaughter, Tammy Lynn; and a great-grandson, Caleb Kennedy. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 4, 2005 at the Ashville Community Church in Sullivan.
