MILFORD – Retired Sgt. Eugene E. McCaffrey, 81, Maine State Police, died May 27, 2008, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 11, 1926, in Rumford, son of Edward and Mary (Frazier) McCaffrey. Gene served in the 185th Infantry U.S. Army during World War II, in the South Pacific, and was a member of Gen. Douglas McArthur’s honor guard at his home and headquarters in Japan. After the war, he joined the Maine State Police, retiring after 20 years of service. He then worked for Brinks and Purolator. Gene enjoyed collecting guns and was an avid reader. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 56 years, Eleanor “Red” McCaffrey of Milford; two daughters, Brandy and her husband, Ron St. Pierre, of Veazie and Bonnet McCaffrey of Glenburn; two sons, Shawn and his wife, Rita McCaffrey, of Michigan and Shannon and his wife, Holly McCaffrey, of Virginia; 10 grandchildren, Aubri and Ron St. Pierre, Olivia and Kelly Dunn, Casey and her husband, Steve Cote, Erin, Ian, Caitlin, Cullen and Keelia McCaffrey; five great-grandchildren, Ashley and Natasha Rowlett, Derek Hunter, and Owen and Samuel Cote. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 300 State St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be after the service in the family lot at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.
