HARTLAND – Eugene “Gene” H. Kaherl Sr., 66, passed away Feb. 26, 2004, at Sebasticook Val-ley Hospital. He was born May 19, 1937, in Hallowell, the son of the late Lloyd and Madlyn (Caldwell) Kaherl. Gene received his education at the Hartland Academy. From 1958-1963, he served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves. On Jan. 30, 1960, Gene married Mildred Smith. Gene and Mildred just recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. Gene worked as an oil burner technician at Webber Oil (Staples) for many years before retiring due to an illness. During his time there he accumulated many close friends. Gene was a devoted husband, father, and dear friend to many. Before his illness, he enjoyed spending time camping and fishing with family and friends. Holidays were particularly special to him because of the family closeness and love. He loved wildlife and especially enjoyed riding in his GMC pickup in the northern woods of Maine looking for moose, deer, bear, and just admiring all of nature’s beauty. In recent years, he enjoyed watching the birds in the bird feeder just outside of his picture window. Gene is survived by his wife, Mildred Kaherl of Hartland; daughters, Madeline Brann and husband, Alton Brann, of Harmony, Linda Holt and husband, Timothy Holt I, of St. Albans; sons, Eugene Kaherl Jr. and wife, Larana Kaherl, of Skowhegan, Michael Kaherl and fianc‚e, Darlene Labree, of Hartland; daughter, Sheila Frost of Pittsfield; five grandchildren, Timothy Holt II, Nick Kaherl, Kasey Kaherl, Katrina Tarr, and Eugene Frost; brother, Harry Kaherl of Newport; sister-in-law, Alice Caldwell of Palmyra; special friend, Chet Morse Sr.; and special uncle, Lawrence Kaherl whom Gene enjoyed spending time with and his musical talent. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. Gene was predeceased by brothers, Gerald B. Kaherl of Hallowell, Bing Caldwell of St. Albans. Visitation will take place 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Donald Shorey Funeral Chapel, Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Hartland, 10 Elm St., officiated by Pastor Tim Pemper. Memorial Contributions may be made in Gene’s memory to an organization of the donor’s choice. Burial will take place in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Hartland. Arrangements are under the care of Donald Shorey Funeral Chapel, Pittsfield. <
