BELFAST – Gene Shute passed away peacefully Friday morning, March 25, 2005, at the Waldo County General Hospital, Hospice Unit. He was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Prospect, the son of Eugene Greenwood Shute Sr. and Alice Dockham Shute. Gene attended Stockton Springs Schools and graduated from Crosby High School in 1939, as President of his class. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army Dec. 14, 1939, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was at Skofield Barracks on Dec. 7, 1941. Upon discharge he returned to Belfast and played semi-pro baseball for the Belfast Merchants. Gene worked for PB Crosby car dealership, Northern Chemical and retired in 1988 after 20 years with Bangor Welding. He was an avid golfer and curler and was a longtime member of Northport Golf Club and Belfast curling club. Gene especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his camp on Pitcher Pond in Lincolnville. Gene derived great pleasure from being with his grandchildren Maggie and Kyle. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Dalton Shute of Belfast; sons, Kevin E. Shute and his wife, Joan, of Bath, Gregory F. Shute and wife, Lynne, of Alna; grandchildren, Maggie Shute of Bath and Kyle Shute of Alna; sister, Alida Coates and husband, Donald, of Orono; nieces, Jan Coates of Mt. Desert, Pam Painter and husband, Mike of Whittehall Ill; and Kathy Uekler of Kirkland, Wash.; and nephews, Peter Dalton and wife, Cindi, of Northport and Pat Dalton of Seattle, Wash. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Waldo County General Hospital, Maine Medical Center and the Belfast Ambulance Service. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast.
